Students Flex Their Muscles for Earth Day

On April 22, the official "Earth Day" the winds were icicle cold with squalls of snow pellets.  It seemed that this year, Mother Earth was in no mood to be nurtured.

A week later at Archerwill School the entire student body and staff joined forces during the last period of the school day and enthusiastically attacked the litter in and around the schoolyard.

Prior to the clean up, Principal Rick Hamel called a school assembly where and the Kelsey Tisdale Healthy Region Community Wellness Coordinator Betty Rudachyk talked to the students about Earth Day: what it is all about and why it is important for each and every one to do their part in taking care of Mother Earth.

Students were offered a number of practical things they can do on a daily basis to be good stewards of the earth.  From there the entire school went outdoors into the sunshine and picked garbage.

Within the litter, many "treasures" were found including an abandoned bird's nest secured in a broken branch and some lost baseballs.  Students also became very creative in making "poker sticks" out of large, sturdy twigs to assist their task.

There was a strong sense of community pride and camaraderie among these grade one to nine students and staff as they laughed and worked together.

The genuine enthusiasm at both schools made this (delayed) Earth Day event a fun and productive activity.  There is no questions that students in Archerwill care about this great place called Earth and the communities in which they live.  They all deserve a pat on the back for this commitment to their community!

In 2007 the Grade 8 & 9 class took a trip to Alberta.  Touring on a large bus they visited Drumheller, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, the Columbian Ice Fields, Edmonton, Calgary, and various spots in between.

Here are some photos from their trip:
